Wardrobe Transformation: Real Talk!

Hey Everybody,

I hope you have been well since our last check in. I am here to broach a life changing topic that involves your closet. Yes, you read correctly, I said life changing. πŸ™‚

It’s life changing because clothing is very much a part of who we are as individuals. We have to wear them. With that alone as a requirement, it means that you should in the least aim to be comfortable if not stylish and happy with those choices you make, right? At least I think so. This is not a wardrobe intervention for you. This is a wardrobe intervention for me as a designer and creator of clothing. πŸ™‚ A long overdue annual “what’s happening?!” in my closet review and purge. Let’s just say it’s been a while.

My situation

With the state of the world during the beginning of Covid 19, I watched many of my friends, family and other fellow designers do purging online or via messages. I planned it but never got to it due to adjusting and let’s be real, totally ignoring the inevitable. It’s a grueling task to go through my closet.

I say grueling because it’s not as simple as creating “keep it or give away” piles. I literally have to go through each item and sometimes even try on outfits to make my decision. You have to admit that is beyond a one day experience. Truth be told that’s the only way I will be able to make a thorough decision on what to keep and what to give away.

Why now?

There’s no particular why now – it’s more why not now. However, I do sense an urgency in this for myself. I have seen how my wardrobe has changed since being in grad school over the past two years as well as now working and running my business from home. I have an idea of the kind of closet I desire to have and for some reason I have not been making a diligent and intentional effort as I declared last year to build and maintain that.

So technically at this point I am shouting into the open. Something’s got to give! It’s going to be a one step at a time process and I need to get on it as I envision my business taking off and my wardrobe needing to meet me there. πŸ™‚ So yeah, now it is! πŸ™‚

The current state of the closet…:(

What’s Next?

Now with my confession of procrastination out the way, it’s all about what is next. I think it’s time I take on this task especially coming into July. I will be realistic and instead of trying to build Rome in a week, I will give myself the entire month of July to do my purge and I will share it with you. Perhaps my methods and techniques will inspire you as you seek to transform your wardrobe in line with where you are at as an individual. What do you say? Will you come with me for the journey? I will do a combination of blog posts and mini videos to bring you on this journey.img_20200628_142720_374.jpgLike with groceries, I say you need to know what you have before you go shopping. That analogy I pass on to looking at the transformation of my closet. The key in my opinion is to know what you have, what is lacking, what you need, what your personal style is and then plan on how you will meet that in creating a closet that works for you. This also includes planning within and around your financial plan for that closet because let’s face it – clothes cost money. Whether you decide on custom or ready-to-wear, your plan has to and should be realistic and cognizant of such.img_20200628_142756_833.jpgI think we fail many times in this area and fall into old habits of impulse buying and not carefully and realistically planning. In addition, not fully exploring your style needs can attribute to such failures. I will address this as I explore my transformation in the coming weeks.

Over the next four weeks, I will be sharing some nuggets and tips as I do my purge and speak to options of creating and buying from a designer perspective. I will also outline my steps to creating that wardrobe that works for me. πŸ™‚

If you have any wardrobe questions or areas you would love for me to talk about, please do not hesitate to comment below and I will be happy to address them in my future blog posts in this area. πŸ™‚

I hope you are keeping well and continue to be safe during these times. Thanks for stopping by!

Bless Uta
